Supernova search and SN photometry

Team leader: Giovanni Sostero

ABSTRACT: the explosion of a dying star is one of the most violent phenomena of the Universe. The SNe Group will patrol some Supernovae outburst occurring in nearby galaxies, studying the lightcurve variation and morphology of some well placed SNe. From this data, the different classes of SN events will be discussed in detail. If telescope-time will allow, the group will also develop some in-house creative SNe-search strategies.

Project summary: (to be discussed ..): Main goal of Supernovas search group is to establish a simple procedure for supernova search in galaxies. We will use standard procedure of Visnjan Observatory for CCD observations: taking  exposure, correcting, cataloging. That will be done in coordination with other groups using telescope time. In the process we'll examine usefulness (for this application) of large software packages for astronomical image processing IRAF in the Unix operative system environment. The procedure to check the existing archive pictures would be proposed working on sample images.
In case of existence of some SN targets of opportunity, the SN photometry is planed.

Participants skills: (to be discussed ...)
 - Some experience in using LINUX
 - Some experience in software for image
               manipulation
 - Fluent use of English.
 - Strong sense of humor.

T-shirt proposal for the group members  (to be discussed)

An possible additional program for the group:
"The Galactic zoo: the strange event of TT Ari"

ABSTRACT:
It's well known that white dwarf stars, are strange beasts on their own: extremely small, hot and compact bodies. They rapresent the ultimate fate for solar mass-sized stars. But when a companion star is placed in the immediate surroundings of the white dwarf itself, almost everything could happen! The author will review about a very particular "animal" that populate our Galaxy: a couple of stars on the edge of a "nerves attack", with an explosive final (KA-BOOM!). The results of an International Photometric Campaign on TT Ari will be  xplained, as well.
