Although the congress was supposed to have only regional importance, this meeting of astrometrists in Italy turned into a happening of larger importance. Hints that such thing would happen could be noticed a couple of months earlier watching the program of the meeting in which were included a number of people from Spaceguard Foundation. You might call it a double congress - astrometrists and Spaceguard.

The meeting has created great media attention, and for the general public of the town of Polino and Terni county, a lecture entitled “Are the asteroids and comets a real threat to our planet ?” was given. The attendance was around a hundred persons.

Here, we have to mention nice reception and kindness of our hosts in Polino and brilliant organization of the congress by the TEAM society.

A general conclusion which can be drawn after the meeting is an assessment of the future development of Spaceguard Foundation. It’s estimated that in the following two years there will be a jump in activity, and depending on the success of the DAGOR project Spaceguard Foundation-Croatia might be in the group conducting the NEO studies in the following 25-30 years.

Image 2: Polino, a very picturesque little town is famous for its beautiful surroundings in the Apennines. It’s also known for the findings of extremely well conserved Jurassic ammonite fossils, known for it’s good cheese, olive oil and back truffles.
