What is S3?

Summer School of Science (S3) is ten day science workshop held at Visnjan Observatory for high school students. It covers several traditional scientific disciplines: biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics. Participants come mainly from Croatia. Official languages are English and Croatian.

School is organized into preferably interdisciplinary projects. Aim of the projects is to provide students with hands-on expirience with science and scientific method in informal atmosphere. Where possible, students are also encouraged to continue projects during the year. Projects are lead by university students and/or scientists. Beside work on projects, all participants have lectures covering topics of general interest.

School also provides opportunity for university students to create and lead projects, organize work and people, thus gaining experience which will help them in later professional life.

First S3 was held in 2001 and represents extension of Visnjan Observatory educational activities which were previously focused on astronomy. S3 is still in its early years and its structure and realization plans may vary from year to year.
