Topic: Why, when, where, language?
Question 1
Why an educational project at Visnjan Observatory?
Answer:
The main idea was to demonstrate in practice to young population that the career in science
and technology can be a prized goal, and give advice and support on that. The astronomical observatory
is just the initiator of the project, and now physics, chemistry, biology, math, technology are part of the
ongoing projects.
Question 2
When and where is it held? Answer

VSA, it is held usualy in the first half of August in the small city of
Visnjan, Istra peninsula, Croatia, Europe

Question 3
Why English as official language for an workshop held in Croatia?
Answer:
Many lecturers, team leader and participants are not from Croatia, Also, near all the references
for the project are in the English, as official language of science and technology..
Topic: Hardware, Lifeware?
Question 1
What equipment is/will be available?
Answer:
Newton Ross telescope 410 mm/4.3 C-8/200mm CCD cameras ST-6, AP8 Audio-visual
equipment: TV, video, etc. Computers and connection to Internet digital camera, scanners, library
Question 2
Who are the team leaders and lecturers?
Answer:
The majority of participants come from the astronomy "Science fair's", but the workshop is open
also for other students 14-18 years old, selected to fill the quote from the application form and "support"
letter of one of teachers from the school he/she is attending.
Question 3
Accommodation? Answer:
ll participants sleep in multi - bed (Spartan?) rooms in a dormitory near the Observatory. Meals
are organized through the "Borgonja" restaurant nearby the dormitory. Somebody thinks their pizza is
great.... but it is not often on the menu :o)
Question 4
How did a typical day look like during VSA?
Answer:
Getting up was around 12:30 -12:45am. Lunch. Then follow the data reduction from previous
night's observation. Lecture in English language starts at 5pm and lasts for hour or 2. Dinner is at 7pm.
The preparations for observation start around 8, 8:30 pm andthe observations run from 9pm till 5:30am.
Then all are supposed to go to bed.

It's not for you. The workshop is intended to help the young's that have the science -
technology - teaching career in mind
Question 2
How can I participate?
Answer:
The majority of participants, (2/3) are contacted during the "Astronomy Science fairs" in
Croatia, but the workshop is open also for other 14-18 years old high school pupils from all around the
world selected to fill the quote of, usually 20, participants. For these other pupils, it is appreciated if their
application form
is accompanied by a presentation letter from one of teachers at the school he/she is
attending. But the procedure is not wery rigid. Exchanges of letters or interviews with one of the team
leaders can be a way also .....
Question 3
Is it expensive? Answer:
No. Sponsors usualy cover the majority of expenses, so the participation fee would be from
500-800 kunas (~80 EUR).
